Permanently excited synchronous motors

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are a type of synchronous motors in which the excitation field is generated by permanent magnets instead of electromagnetic windings. How it works

Permanently excited synchronous motors (PMSM) work with permanent magnets on the rotor, which generate the necessary magnetic field. The stator consists of electromagnetic windings powered by alternating current. Since the rotor’s magnetic field is constant and does not have to be generated by external power sources, the rotor and stator field rotate synchronously. This means there are no slip losses like induction motors, resulting in precise and efficient performance.

Efficiency and power density

By using permanent magnets, PMSM are extremely efficient as no energy has to be used to generate the magnetic field in the rotor. This results in a high power density, allowing these engines to deliver more power per unit weight.
